The Federal Police of Brazil arrested the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro (southeast), Luiz Fernando Pezao, accused of corruption offenses.
In a statement, the police reported that the police operation, involving 150 agents, "seeks to suppress crimes of money laundering, criminal organization and active and passive corruption, committed by the top leadership of the administration of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro de Janeiro ".
Pezao was arrested at his home, the Palace of Laranjeiras, early in the morning, following an order of preventive detention of the Superior Court of Justice.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, between 2007 and 2015 the governor received at least 40 million reais (10.3 million dollars) in bribes, and the plot was still active today.
In addition to the governor, eight other people were also arrested, including government secretaries, businessmen and family members.
Pezao belongs to the ruling Democratic Movement of Brazil (MDB) and succeeded the governor of Rio Sérgio Cabral, who has been in prison since 2016 and has more than 100 convictions for multiple corruption offenses.
With the arrest of his successor, there are already four governors of Rio who are imprisoned or were at one time (the former, Anthony Garotihno and Rosinha Matheus were convicted of electoral crimes).
