With 94 votes in favor, the assemblymen elected the new vice president of the country, replacing María Alejandra Vicuña.
The National Assembly of Ecuador named Otto Sonnenholzner as the new vice president of the Republic on Tuesday , with 94 votes in favor, 7 against and 7 abstentions of the 128 assembly members.
This election of the position takes place a week after the Parliament accepted the resignation of María Alejandra Vicuña, who was involved in an investigation for collecting undue funds.
Article 150 of the Constitution determines that in case of definitive lack of the Vice President of the Republic, the Assembly , with the vote of the majority of its members, must choose its replacement from a list sent by the President of the Republic.
The new vice president had to be elected by a majority of the members of the legislative body, equivalent to 70 votes.
The other candidates for the position were Nancy Vasco de Maldonado and Agustín Albán.
The new vice president will finish his term in the remainder of the current period of government, that is, until May 24, 2021.
