The World’s Largest Floating Solar Plant Is Finally Online

In the city of Huainan in Anhui province in China, the world's largest floating solar plant with a capacity of 40 megawatts is officially running.

According to ecoinventos.com review, floating solar farms have several advantages, since they do not use valuable land in densely populated areas. China has more than 100 cities with populations of more than 1,000,000. The United States, by comparison, has 10.

These facilities help conserve the fresh water supply by reducing evaporation. In return, water keeps the ambient temperature lower around the solar panels, which helps increase its efficiency while limiting its degradation by long-term heat.

The most interesting thing about the floating solar plant in Huainan is that the lake where it is installed has been created with rainwater after the surrounding land collapsed after intensive coal mining operations for decades. Anhui province is rich in coal reserves and has been the reserve of coal used to feed the Chinese economy.

Last year, another 20-megawatt floating solar plant came on stream in Anhui province. Last January, China activated the Longyangxia dam solar park. Covering 10 square miles, it generates a whopping 850 megawatts of energy - enough for 200,000 homes.
